In April 1881, Mary Ann Bartlett was an annuitant, aged 74, at the New Inn.

Mary was born at Hardington in about 1807, the daughter of Robert and Mary Eastment.

On 21 February 1828, she married Matthew Bartlett at Hardington. In 1843, they lived in Moor Lane, in what was later Major’s Kirkland’s.

When Matthew’s father died in December 1853, Matthew became the landlord of the New Inn. When his mother died in February 1855, he inherited one-sixth of her estate. Her estate was valued at under £200.[i]

Matthew died in 1877, aged 68. The inn then passed to Henry Sandiford, the husband of their daughter Jane Augusta.

Mary died intestate on 29 January 1885, aged 77, leaving a personal estate valued at £15-7s-6d.

Matthew and Mary had four sons and four daughters.
