About this project

The site is built from primary sources and develops from them. Many entries begin with fragmentary evidence — a census entry, a newspaper report, a will — and are extended where the record allows.

Biography provides the central thread. By reconstructing individual lives, it becomes possible to examine wider questions of work, family, landholding, and change within the parish.

Where the evidence is uncertain, this is made clear.

Themes

Across the material, recurring themes include:

  • agricultural change and rural decline

  • family structure and inheritance

  • poverty, illness, and encounters with the law

  • the relationship between national events and village life
