In June 1841, Susan Bullock was an independent, aged 70, living at Hardington Marsh.

Susan was born at Hardington in about 1768, the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Bartlett.

On 24 November 1792, she married Samuel Bullock at Hardington.

They had a son, George, in 1794 and a daughter, Elizabeth, in 1798. Sarah Bullock, who was baptised at Hardington on 25 January 1818, is recorded as the daughter of Samuel and Susanna. However, as Susanna was 50 years old, Sarah may have been the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth.

The Hardington baptism register recorded Samuel’s occupation as a labourer in 1818. He died in December 1822, aged 60.

Susan’s mother’s will

On 14 December 1833, Susan appeared at Wells to prove the will of her mother, Elizabeth Bartlett. Her estate was valued at under £100.[i]

Elizabeth Bartlett left her son, George, a silver bowl.

She left a house and garden at Hardington to her three daughters, Susannah Bullock, Dorcas Mitchell and Edith Beer (wife of Charles), as tenants in common.

She left the remainder equally to her daughters, Susannah Bullock, Dorcas Mitchell, Jane (the wife of Thomas Game), Ann (the wife of John Apsey) and Edith Beer.

Death

Susan Bullock died in May 1847 at West Coker, aged 82. She probably died at the home of her son-in-law, Edward Purchase.
