Childhood
Elizabeth Strode, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Strode, was born at Haselbury in about 1829. She was probably born at Moulton’s Farm, where she lived in June 1841.
In 1849, she inherited £8 from her grandfather, Emanuel Slade.[1]
Life at Kingswood Farm
In March 1851, Elizabeth was a house servant at Kingswood, working for her grandmother, Ann Slade. She remained at the farm for the rest of her life. The farm’s support became more consequential after her father died in 1857.
When Ann Slade died in 1863, the farm passed to Elizabeth’s brother, William. However, Elizabeth’s mother inherited one-quarter of the farm’s live and deadstock. When her mother died in 1877, she did not leave a will.
Elizabeth worked with her brother for more than thirty-five years. The census returns sometimes describe her as active in her farm work and sometimes as a person of independent means.
Elizabeth witnessed her brother William’s will on 26 April 1899. William died on 31 October 1899, and his wife, Rebecca, died on 12 January 1908.
Elizabeth’s life at Kingswood Farm continued, with the farm run by her nephews, Francis and Bertie. She died intestate on 15 October 1911, aged 82, leaving effects valued at £1,121-2s-11d.
