In April 1861, Elizabeth Leach, a 67-year-old retired farmer living in the village, was the widow of Horatio Nelson Leach, who died in 1851.

Early life

Elizabeth, born at Hardington  on 2 October 1791, was the daughter of Roger and Edith Eastment. Her father died in 1811, and her mother in 1820.

In 1818, she inherited £10 from her uncle, Dennis Eastment.

First marriage

On 14 March 1816, Elizabeth married a farmer named Robert Bartlett at Hardington. The following year, they had one daughter who died in infancy.

Robert died on 3 February 1835, aged 50 or 51.

Second marriage

On 2 February 1837, at Crewkerne Parish Church, Elizabeth married Horatio Nelson Leach. He became the occupier of Manor Farm.

He died in June 1851, aged 47. In April 1861, Elizabeth lived in a house near the New Inn. She died in September 1868, aged 78.
