Introduction

Samuel Russell and his wife were both born at West Coker. Samuel served with the Royal Marines and, after retiring, he lived near Plymouth. Following the death of his wife in 1878, he spent his final years with a relative of hers at Hardington Moor.

Birth

Samuel was born at West Coker in about 1804, the son of William and Susannah Russell.

Marriage

Samuel married Ann, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Hayward, at West Coker on 10 July 1826. They were both about 22 years old at the time of their marriage. They both signed the marriage register with a cross, and according to that record and the banns book, they both resided in the parish at that time.

Military career

Samuel Russell served in the Royal Marines.

Civilian life in Plymouth

By March 1851, Samuel’s career in the Royal Marines had ended, and he was living as a pensioner in East Stonehouse. Samuel and Ann lived at East Stonehouse for many years at the following addresses:

March 1851- 47 George Street

April 1861- 5 Pound Street

April 1871- 4 Pound Street

Ann’s death

Ann died at East Stonehouse in 1878 at the age of 72.

Samuel’s later life

After Ann’s death, Samuel moved to Hardington Moor to live with Edward Hayward, his late wife’s nephew. Samuel died at Hardington on 15 May 1884 at the age of 80.[1]
