In April 1861, John Bishop, aged 70, was a dairyman at Oil Moor.

Childhood

John was born at Hooke in about 1791, the son of Daniel and Charity.

First marriage

On 10 May 1814, John married Susannah Swaffield at Whitchurch Canonicorum. When their first son was born the following year, John was a dairyman at Beaminster.

His time as a dairyman was short-lived because, by April 1817, John was a labourer at Broadwindsor.

John and Susannah’s other children were all born at Broadwindsor. They had four sons and three daughters in total.

Susannah died in May 1845, aged 53.

Second marriage

On 10 July 1850, John married Elizabeth Naile at Chideock. The couple lived at Broadwindsor. Elizabeth died in August 1858, aged about 64.

Third marriage

On 10 July 1860, John married a widow named Hannah Hallett at Burstock.

Hannah’s support, possibly including money, enabled John to resume his dairyman occupation. By April 1891, John and Hannah were at Hardington, along with Hannah’s son, Benjamin Charles Hallett.

John and Hannah eventually returned to Broadwindsor, where John died in March 1870, aged 78.

Hannah lived with sons by her first marriage for the remainder of her life. In April 1871, she lived with her son, Richard Hallett, at Misterton. At the time of her death in March 1880, aged 81, she lived at Victoria Buildings, Yeovil, with her son, Benjamin, who was by then an engine driver.
