In April 1891, Rosa Annie Peach, aged 14, was at Partway Cottage, living on her own means. Her sister, Bessie, aged 8, was also there.

Childhood

Rosa Annie Peach was born at Crewkerne in 1876, the daughter of George and Susan Peach. Her father was a miller at Haymore Mill, and her mother was the daughter of John and Jane Swaffield.

Her father was a failure in business. Soon after he married, he took on the tenancy of Grey’s Farm, Powerstock, a 190-acre holding, but he was only there for a few years. His venture at Haymore Mill also failed because, by April 1881, he was a farm labourer at Mosterton, despite having probably inherited £600 from his mother in 1879.

By April 1891, the children had become separated from their parents. George and Susan were at Muchelney, where George worked as a groom, but they had none of their children with them. Of those under sixteen, Emily was in the care of a charity at Salisbury, Rosa and Bessie were with Ann Read at Hardington, and James was a farm servant at Huish Episcopi.

Later life

In March 1901, Rosa was a general domestic servant in a house in the Crescent, Taunton. On 7 January 1902, she married a postman named John Henry Jones at Taunton. In April 1911, they lived at 4 Holway Hill, Taunton, which remained their home until they died.

John died on 29 January 1937, aged 63. Rosa died on 16 July 1964, aged 87, leaving effects valued at £2,842.

Rosa and her husband had one son and one daughter.
