In April 1881, Mary Ann Bartlett, aged 15, was a pupil-teacher. In April 1891, she was a national school teacher (at South Perrott).
Childhood at Hardington
Mary was born at Hardington on 27 January 1866, the daughter of Emanuel and Virtue Bartlett, who lived at Hill End. Her father was a farm labourer.
Mary began her teaching career at Hardington and then moved to South Perrott, where she was by December 1886.
Teaching at South Perrott
In December 1886, Mary was examined for a teacher’s certificate and placed in the third division of candidates of the second year. Her certificate states that she had served the required probation period in the South Perrott National School. She was in charge of South Perrott school from 1887 until her marriage.[1]
Married life
On 3 January 1901, at South Perrott, Mary married Frederick Herbert Studley, the son of Hugh Symes Studley of Hill Farm. His sister, Rosa, was also a teacher at South Perrott School.
After their marriage, Frederick and Mary initially resided at Lewcombe Woods Farm, Evershot. Around 1903, they moved to Woodcock Farm, Mosterton. Following the death of Frederick’s father on 19 October 1919, they took over Hill Farm, South Perrott.
Mary died on 18 January 1939, aged 72. Frederick died on 10 November 1951, aged 78, leaving effects valued at £6,400-5s-9d.
Frederick and Mary had two sons and one daughter.
