In June 1841, John Dungey, aged 35, was a mason living at Hardington Mandeville in the household of Roger Purchase, a labourer.

Childhood

John was born at Milborne Port in about 1804, the son of William and Susannah. His father was a weaver who later became a shopkeeper and beer retailer.

Life at Hardington

John lived at Hardington from the early 1830s to 1842. He witnessed a  marriage at Pendomer on 16 May 1833 and at Hardington on 5 October 1835 and 11 April 1836.

First marriage

On 7 June 1842, John married Elizabeth Aplin at the Yeovil register office. He gave his address as Hardington; she gave her address as East Street, Taunton.

John and Elizabeth probably moved to Sherborne at this time. There, John continued to work as a mason.

In March 1851, John and Elizabeth lived at 104 Bristol Road; in April 1861, they lived at 229 Bristol Road.

Elizabeth died in November 1862, aged 55

Second marriage

On 13 June 1863, John married Charlotte Aplin, his late wife’s younger sister, at St Mary Magdalen, Taunton. At that time, it was illegal for a man to marry his deceased’s wife sister. However, as Charlotte was too old to have children and they had few assets, they decided to accept the risk.

In April 1871, John and Charlotte lived in the top part of Cheap Street.

Death

John died in August 1880, aged 77, and was interred at Milborne Port. Charlotte died in 1896, aged 77.
