Gilbert Leach Partridge was a baker at Hardington Moor from about 1893 to 1910.

Early life

Gilbert was born at Hardington on 4 July 1870. He was the oldest child of Abraham Partridge, a baker, and his wife, Julia.

In April 1891, Gilbert was an assistant baker, presumably working for his father.

Own business

On 14 November 1893, at Hardington, Gilbert married Emma French, a farmer’s daughter from Islington in Devon, who may have worked at Hardington Rectory as a servant.[1] At about this time, he set up in business on his own account, renting the premises owned by John Yeandle’s son-in-law, James Warr.

In December 1894, Gilbert was elected as a Parish Councillor.[2]

In about 1910 or 1911, he changed his business to cheese factoring, and in 1915, he rented a cottage at Marsh Farm.

Move to Almondsbury

By 1918, Gilbert and Emma embarked on a new chapter, relocating to Almondsbury, just north of Bristol.

In June 1921, Gilbert was unemployed. His last employer was a baker named Mr A. Williams.

Emma died at Almondsbury on 5 January 1938, aged 69.

On the 1939 register, Gilbert is recorded as a Delivery Fruit Salesman living at Townsend, Almondsbury.

Gilbert died on 24 November 1956, aged 86, leaving effects valued at £663-18s-9d. His last address was 94 The Hill, Almondsbury. His executor was his niece, Nora Evelyn Roskelly (the daughter of his sister, Ellen).
