Birth

Daniel, the fourth child of James and Joan Paul, was born at Seavington St Mary in about 1791.

Marriage

On 6 February 1824, Daniel married Rachel Hodges at Seavington St Mary. She was the daughter of Giles and Mary Hodges.

Married life at Seavington St Mary

Until about 1832, Daniel and Rachel lived at Seavington St Mary, where Daniel worked as a labourer.

Hardington

In about 1832, Daniel and his family moved to Moor Farm, Hardington.

The 1843 tithe survey recorded Daniel as the occupier of 32 acres owned by William Reynolds and a small orchard owned by Thomas Richards.

Parish offices

Daniel was an overseer in 1837.[1]

Death

Daniel died on 21 February 1843, aged 51, leaving an estate valued at “under £200.”

His widow, Rachel, who never remarried, survived him by twenty-six years.

Executors: my sons, James and Daniel Paul.

Trustees: Robert Hodges of Seavington St Mary (brother-in-law) and Iona Hodges of Seavington St Mary.

To wife for life: four divisions of a house at Towns end, Seavington St Mary.

Residue to wife. After her death, to my five children equally.

The will refers to four sons (James, Thomas, Giles and Daniel) and their sister, Mary.

Other property to be sold at public auction and the proceeds invested. To children when the youngest is 21.

Children

Daniel and Rachel had seven children:

1825-Mary (married Thomas Rendell, a shoemaker, in 1843 and emigrated to America),

Circa 1827-Elizabeth (died in infancy),

1829-James (emigrated to America in 1849),

1831 Thomas (married Mary Ann Bartlett in 1855),

Circa 1834-Giles Hodges (died unmarried, aged 21),

Circa 1836-Daniel (became a tailor in London),

1838-Sarah Elizabeth (died in infancy).
