Introduction
Elizabeth Strode was the daughter of Emanuel and Anne Slade of Kingswood Farm, Hardington. After she was widowed in 1857, she moved to the farm in the early 1860s. In April 1871, she was an annuitant aged 61. She died in 1877.
Childhood
Elizabeth was born at North Perrott on 7 August 1809, the daughter of Emanuel and Ann Slade.
Married life
On 28 July 1828, she married William Strode of East Chinnock at St Thomas Church, Bristol. From about 1829 until the 1840s, the couple lived at Moulton’s Farm, Haselbury. In July 1848, they resided at Minterne Magna, and by March 1851, they were at Pendomer, where William worked as a dairyman.
In 1849, Elizabeth inherited £100 from her father for her “sole and separate use.”[1]
William died at Paviotts Mills Farm, East Coker, on 1 August 1857 from emphysema and heart disease at age 53.[2] He was laid to rest at East Chinnock.
Widowhood
By April 1861, Elizabeth was living in Sherborne Road, Yeovil, where she was a ‘dairyman’ renting 21 cows. Living with her were her son, William John, and his wife and daughter. Her nephew, Emanuel John Adams, also lived with her.
When her mother died in February or March 1863, Kingswood Farm passed to Elizabeth’s son, William John. However, Elizabeth inherited one-quarter of the livestock and deadstock.[3]
In April 1871, William John Strode was a farmer of 287 acres at Kingswood, employing three men and one boy. Elizabeth lived at the farm as well. She died in 1877 at the age of 68.
William and Elizabeth had children: Elizabeth, born in 1828, and William, born in about 1833.
