Introduction

In April 1881, George Eastment, then 18 years old, was a baker boarding with Abraham Partridge. Over the next ten years, he and his brother, Nathaniel, moved to South Wales, where they married local women and settled down. Initially, both brothers worked as railway labourers, but George later changed to coal mining.

Life at Hardington

George was born in Hardington in 1863. His father, Edward, was a farm labourer, and his mother, Elizabeth, was a glover.

In April 1871, George lived with his parents in a house in the High Street. Although he was a baker in 1881, he did not continue in that occupation.

Life in South Wales

By April 1891, George and his brother, Nathaniel, had moved to Cardiff, where they worked as railway labourers and boarded together at 28 Flora Street.

In 1892, George married Eliza Jones at Pontypridd, twelve miles north of Cardiff. She was the daughter of Thomas Jones, a builder’s haulier.

The couple settled in the town, and George found work as a coal hewer.

In March 1901, they lived at 18 Tower Street and in April 1911 and June 1921, at 21 Queen Street.

In June 1921, George worked in a pit in Hopkinstown.

Children

By April 1911, George and Eliza had six children living; a seventh child had died.

Death

George died in about 1926, aged 62, while Eliza died in 1931, aged 56.
