Introduction

Harriet Galpin served as an assistant teacher in the village school in the early 1850s, working alongside her mother, Harriet Galpin, senior.

Childhood

Harriet was born at Yetminster in about 1826, the daughter of William and Harriet Galpin.

In June 1841, she lived with her mother at Leigh. Her father died in April 1842, aged 44.

Hardington

By March 1851, Harriet lived near Hardington Parsonage with her mother and younger brother, Henry. Her mother was a teacher at the village school, and Harriet was her assistant.

Death

On 22 February 1854, Harriet died from a lumbar abscess, aged about 27.[1] She was buried in the churchyard on 1 March 1854.

[1] Although her death certificate and the Hardington Burial register give her age as 25, she was older. She was baptised at Yetminster on 25 November 1826.
