Introduction

Henry Stickland married Tamar Eastment, the only daughter of a retired Hardington farmer. Throughout his life, he held various jobs—including dealer, policeman, and innkeeper—across Wiltshire, Dorset, Somerset, Devon, and South Wales. He and Tamar had a large family. During the 1850s, they lived at Hardington where he worked as farm labourer and farmer.

Birth

Henry was born at Steeple Langford, Wiltshire, in about 1817.

Marriage

In 1839, Henry married Tamar Eastment, the only child of John and Hester Eastment, in or near Shaftesbury. John Eastment farmed at Marsh Farm, Hardington until 1830.[1]

Gillingham

In June 1841, Henry and his family lived in Wavering Lane, Gillingham. His household included his parents-in-law and Ann Stickland, aged 22. His father-in-law, John Eastment, died in September 1842, and he was buried at Hardington.

Henry was a farmer in 1841, a coal carrier in 1844 and a dealer in 1848.

Hardington

From about 1850 to 1857, Henry and his family resided at Hardington, where he engaged in farming. The 1851 census recorded his occupation as a farm labourer, while the baptism entries for his children from 1852 to 1857 listed him as a farmer, and the jury list of 1854 recorded him as a yeoman.

Henry occupied a leasehold house and land. In about 1857, he joined the police, and Job Taylor became the occupier of his house and land.

During their time at Hardington, Tamar’s mother, Hester Eastment, died on 2 June 1854.[2]

Police career

Henry served as a police constable at Ilminster until the early 1860s.[3] In 1864, he was a policeman at Curry Rivel.[4]

North Devon

By April 1871, Henry was a gamekeeper living at Fairy Cross, Alwington, with his wife and three children. Ten years later, he was an innkeeper at Hoops Hamlet, Parkham.

Tamar’s death

Tamar died on 18 April 1881, aged 63.

South Wales

Towards the end of his life, Henry moved to South Wales. By April 1891, he was a boarder at 8 Wood Street, Barry.

Henry died in the Cardiff area on 3 October 1891, aged 74.

Children

Henry and Tamer had eleven children.
