Introduction

Jonas Delamont was a shoemaker at Hardington from at least 1813 until his death in 1850. He was married twice and had a total of eleven children plus one stepdaughter.

Birth

Jonas was born around 1770 at Hardington, the son of John and Mary Delamont.

First marriage

On 16 April 1794, he married Elizabeth Rendell at Hardington. Together, they had eight children. She died in January 1826 at he age of 52.

Second marriage

On 16 November 1826, he married Sarah Delamont at Hardington. This marriage resulted in three children: Jonah, Jonas, and Charlotte.

Sarah had an illegitimate daughter named Sarah, born in about 1823. Sadly, she broke her back and passed away on 18 August 1841, at just 19 years old.[1]

In 1843, Jonas held two cottages in Moor Lane (numbers 150 and 151 on the tithe map).

Jonas died on 29 July 1850, at the age of 80.[2] After his death, Sarah lived with the gardener, George White, and his wife at Barry Lane. She died in December 1855 at the age of 71.

Children

Jonas had eight children by his first marriage and three by his second.

Jonas’s property appears to have passed to Jonah, his oldest son by his second wife. Jonah died in 1892.

Jonah’s eldest son, Edwin, who lived at Hardington Moor, died in 1930, leaving an estate valued at £180-7s-6d. He left all his property to his wife for her lifetime and then to their six children.
