Introduction

Mary Delamont moved to Hardington with her husband, Lewis, in 1806 and stayed there until his death in 1832. She was significantly older than Lewis, so when he died at the age of 46, she was about 63. After his death, she spent some time at Haselbury before returning to live with her son, also named Lewis, where she received outdoor relief as a pauper.

Birth

Mary Culver was born in about 1769 at Tintinhull. She may have been the daughter of John and Sarah Culver, baptised at Martock on 18 February 1770.

Marriage

On 30 June 1806, Mary married Lewis Delamont of Hardington at Closworth. Both of them signed the marriage register with a mark. Lewis was 20 years old, while Mary was about 37.

After their marriage, Lewis and Mary settled at Hardington, where they had seven children. Lewis worked as a labourer and, according to the Hardington burial register, they lived at Hardington Marsh at the time of Lewis’s death in 1832.

Husband’s death

Lewis died in August 1832, at the age of 46.[1]

Mary’s later life

By June 1841, Mary was living with Joseph and Honor Delamont at East Cross Hill, Haselbury. Honor was the daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth Bartlett of Hardington.

Ten years later, Mary was a pauper, living in the household of her son, Lewis, at Lyatts.

Mary died in October 1851 at the age of 84. Her son Lewis died on 4 September 1865 at the age of 55 due to an abscess in his upper jawbone.[2]

Children

Lewis and Mary had two sons and five daughters.
