In April 1881, Samuel Russell, aged 74, was a pensioner living at Hardington Moor in Edward Hayward’s household.

Samuel was born at West Coker in about 1804, the son of William and Susannah Russell.

He married Ann, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Hayward, at West Coker on 10 July 1826.

By March 1851, Samuel’s career in the Royal Marines had ended.

Samuel and Ann lived at East Stoneham for many years:

March 1851 47 George Street

April 1861 5 Pound Street

April 1871 4 Pound Street

Ann died at East Stonehouse in 1878, aged 72. Samuel then moved to Hardington Moor to live with Edward Hayward, his late wife’s nephew. Samuel died at Hardington on 15 May 1884, aged 80.[1]
